Journalism : A book review about 'The old man and the sea'

Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is the deceivingly simple story of an old Cuban fisherman who undergoes the most difficult struggle of his life. Despite being a relatively short work, the novel is filled not only with drama but with the parable of one man's perseverance through the hardest of times. In the title character, Santiago, Hemingway depicts one of the most distinguished examples in American Literature of an individual looking deep within to summon the courage necessary to get through the triumphs and tragedies that life represented by the sea presents.
Alone on the sea, Santiago continuously struggles to find hope in several seemingly hopeless situations. The old man exemplifies Hemingway's ideal of exhibiting "grace under pressure," as he refuses to submit to the overwhelming obstacles presented by the sea. Santiago's attitude seems to be that although he is faced with tragedy as everyone is sooner or later in life, he will not cease struggling. Relying on memories of his youth, news of the Great DiMaggio's recovery from injury, and thoughts of the boy, Santiago finds the strength to physically and emotionally carry on throughout the story.
After hooking the great marlin, Santiago realizes he is unable to quickly kill the fish, and it proceeds to tow him farther out to sea. Yet, throughout the test of endurance between man and fish the old man begins to recognize a bond between he and the marlin, repeatedly referring to it as his brother; he elaborates, "Now we are joined together and have been since noon. And no one to help either one of us". The old man and the fish are both mere inhabitants among the diverse tropical life residing in the Gulf Stream, bonded by the fact that they are at the mercy of the sea.
Although the old man seemingly fails once the sharks steal his prize fish, they cannot take away the fact that Santiago, the primary target for the jest and pity of other fishermen, has done the unthinkable by staying with and catching a fish "bigger than he had ever heard of". According to the "Hemingway Code," based on principles of courage and endurance, the old man has actually triumphed in spite of his loss. In spite of not successfully bringing the fish back, Santiago fights with dignity -first to land the marlin, then to protect his fish from the sharks- and in doing so asserts his humanity. Santiago endures and successfully survives his supreme ordeal, fighting the timeless battle of man vs. fate, with honor by remaining resilient in the face of triumph and tragedy.

Journalism : Book review about 'A Farawell to Arms

Critics usually describe Hemingway's style as simple, spare, and journalistic. These are all good words; they all apply. Perhaps because of his training as a newspaperman, Hemingway is a master of the declarative, subject-verb-object sentence. His writing has been likened to a boxer's punches--combinations of lefts and rights coming at us without pause.
The simplicity and the sensory richness flow directly from Hemingway's and his characters's beliefs. The harsh, vivid language has the immediacy of a news bulletin. These are facts, Hemingway is telling us, and they can't be ignored. And just as Frederic Henry comes to distrust abstractions like "patriotism," so does Hemingway distrust them. Instead he seeks the concrete, the tangible: "hot red wine with spices, cold air that numbs your nose." A simple "good" becomes higher praise than another writer's string of decorative adjectives.
Though Hemingway is best known for the tough simplicity of style, Taking a close look at A Farewell to Arms, we will often find another Hemingway at work--a writer who is aiming for certain complex effects, who is experimenting with language, and who is often self-consciously manipulating words. Some sentences are clause-filled and eighty or more words long. Take for example the description in Chapter 1 that begins, "There were mists over the river and clouds on the mountain"; it paints an entire dreary wartime autumn and foreshadows the deaths not only of many of the soldiers but of Catherine. Hemingway's style changes, too, when it reflects his characters' changing states of mind. Writing from Frederic Henry's point of view, he sometimes uses a modified stream-of-consciousness technique, a method for spilling out on paper the inner thoughts of a character.
Thus, Hemingway's prose is in fact an instrument finely tuned to reflect his characters and their world. As reading A 'Farewell to Arms', I was deeply inspired by the thoughts and feelings Hemingway seeks to express in us by the way he uses language.

topic : The Topic of our own(Is it right for human to use environment for own good?)

The Earth has been our home for a long time. It offers not only the space to live in but also the food and clothes that is essential to our lives. Nowadays, however, the Earth is not what it was in the past. The Earth is constantly damaged and destroyed by us, human beings. Especially, the ecosystem and resources are one of the major victims of human activity.
Above all, the Earth’s ecosystem is being damaged by human activity. The ozone layer is getting thinner because of the overuse of CFC. When we use spray or make refrigerator, a lot of CFC is created and released to the atmosphere. Thus, the ozone layer is destroyed and too much ultraviolet reaches to the Earth. Ultraviolet damages most of the creature and causes skin cancer to human beings. Moreover, the pollution is one of the major problems to the Earth’s damage. The fume and smoke emitted from the factories cause the air pollution. Unfiltered water coming from housings and farms and industrial sewage pollute the water. Thus, the Han River in Seoul, the capital of Korea, is polluted so much that no one can swim there. In this way, human activities are destroying the Earth.
Human activity also harms the Earth as it depletes all the resources of the Earth. Resources are not endless; it is limited. Human beings, however, waste the resources continuously. For example, we are running out of the petroleum. Petroleum is one of the most valuable resources to the human since it is used in the all part of our lives. If it had not been for the petroleum, the development in industry would be impossible. Although we know it, we are wasting it and it causes not only the retardation in the development but also the disturbance in the Earth. Furthermore, making the endangered species is one of the faults done by human. Those can be regarded as invaluable resources to Earth. However, human activities are eliminating many species. Human activity is damaging the Earth in terms of depleting the resources of Earth.
The Earth is harmed by human activity as we are destroying the ecosystem by pollution and depleting all resources. As all of us know, however, the Earth is the only planet given to the human. We should protect and keep the Earth from the close of it. No more human activities should destroy our precious planent, the Earth.
